One of my favorite quotes by Dr Seuss often plays in my mind, “Sometimes you’ll never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory”. Dr Seuss.
A portrait session allows us to create these moments, to record memories. To be able to create memories is what I love the most as a photographer. I have created quite a few portraits over the years that have been a families or a persons last photograph. It is an honour to be able to provide this service.
This is Paula & Noel and their whippets. Noel passed away only 3 weeks after I had the experience of capturing some of his personality. We did an in home portrait session and this was one of my favorites.
At the studio we often get request for donations of money or goods. While we happily donate goods/services where possible to worthy causes, sometimes a cause comes along that makes me wish I could do more.
The most recent for a young man in his early 20s, who only has a short time left to live. As a parent I couldn’t imagine the horror, as a person I couldn’t imagine the ways I’d want to live the time I’d have left, as a photographer I’d want to document it.
While donating a family session and wall portrait to an auction fundraiser for the young man and his family, I felt like it wasn’t enough. So I have also donated the same gift to the family and the young man and sincerely hope they make contact and allow me the honour to create a family portrait for them.
Times like this make you realise life is short, don’t take tomorrow for granted, record your family portrait you never know when it might be your last.
